Mechanism of Action Research

MT-I acts primarily through the MC1R receptor expressed on melanocytes. Receptor activation triggers adenylyl cyclase signaling, elevating intracellular cAMP, which activates protein kinase A (PKA) and the MITF pathway, leading to upregulation of tyrosinase and other enzymes involved in melanin biosynthesis in cell culture models.
